Service Multiple Years

The best experience usually starts with a two-year commitment. The first year can be difficult as you learn a new culture and teach in a new environment. The second year is usually incredibly rewarding, as relationships with staff and coworkers really start to develop.

Those who stay for a third year and beyond tend to have the best experience of all due to a deeper understanding of the resident culture, of the culture within the school, and of relationships with and between students.

Most agencies and schools require training before beginning to serve. Training may include pre-field orientation, school orientation, and agency-specific training.

School calendar years vary by position, agency, and location. Be sure to acquire the following information from all potential-placement schools:

  • Starting date
  • Orientation requirements
  • Process for obtaining a visa (may take several weeks)

Most schools require a health screening in addition to background checks and other reference verifications.
